Lisa Maxtutis Kimmel

Lisa Maxtutis Kimmel was born in Hartford, Connecticut. Upon graduating high school at 17 years old, Lisa was not sure whether she wanted to pursue a college education so decided to take a job with a small law firm in Hartford at the encouragement of one of her high school teachers. Lisa worked for three attorneys who eventually suggested that Lisa might want to pursue a law degree herself. Lisa attended Greater Hartford Community College and later the University of Hartford while working for the same law firm and other jobs to put herself through school. Lisa earned her bachelor of arts degree in Politics and Government in 1987, and her law degree from the University of San Diego in 1990. While in law school Lisa worked as a summer associate at Cummings & Lockwood a large corporate firm based in Stamford, Connecticut. She was offered a position before she started her third year of law school, and began working there after graduation. However, Lisa was interested in litigation and advocacy rather than corporate representation, and accepted a position as managing attorney for White Mountain Legal Aid in Show Low, Arizona, where she represented clients in domestic relations and consumer matters. After the birth of her son, Lisa transferred to the Tucson legal aid office, where she focused primarily on domestic relations matters and legislative advocacy. Lisa participated in legislation involving domestic violence and child support, and she litigated a case on child custody jurisdiction which resulted in a published Arizona Supreme Court opinion, In re Ledet (Citation). After nearly four years at legal aid, Lisa wanted to broaden her representation of consumers and transitioned her practice to include personal injury, nursing home negligence and abuse, insurance bad faith, sexual assault, and cases involving injuries and harm to children particularly disabled children. During her 23 years in the practice of law, Lisa has had several jury trials involving negligent road design, nursing home abuse and financial exploitation of vulnerable adults, insurance agent negligence and insurance bad faith, medical malpractice, premises liability cases and motor vehicle personal injury cases. Lisa has settled countless cases through negotiation and mediation as well as arbitrating countless others. Lisa herself has served as an arbitrator. Lisa has handled a number of appellate cases including a nursing home published opinion from the Arizona Court of Appeals Division II, Corbett v. Manor Care. Lisa has tried cases in Pima, Maricopa, Navajo, Apache, Santa Cruz and Cochise counties as well as in the United States District Court for the District of Arizona, has litigated in federal district court in Pennsylvania and Colorado, has handled cases in White Mountain Apache and Tohono O'odham tribal courts as well as the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals and the Arizona Supreme Court. Lisa has given presentations at the University of Arizona and a variety of professional organizations on victims' rights, domestic violence, and nursing home abuse and neglect. Lisa has volunteered for non-profit organizations focusing on advocacy of victims, and has acted as legal counsel for the University of Arizona study on restorative justice involving sexual assault cases. On a personal note, Lisa has two teenaged children, participates in events supporting youth education and sports. Lisa has lived in Tucson for 20 years, and considers Tucson her home.
