About James K. Hasson Jr.
Federal tax law is a major regulatory mechanism for hospitals, universities, foundations, medical research institutes, trade associations and other tax-exempt organizations and the individuals and businesses that support them. Jim Hasson advises clients and defends them in matters addressed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and other governmental agencies such as the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and state attorneys general. Jim guides clients in designing the optimal structure for a new or reorganized organization, planning for the organization's financial support and programmatic operations, and negotiating contracts, licenses and financing arrangements for their projects. With more than four decades of experience, Jim has deep knowledge of the legislative process and he works to craft legislative or regulatory provisions for the benefit of tax-exempt organizations. Jim also counsels clients in the operation and financing of closely-held businesses, especially those owned by supporters of charitable organizations, and in the estate planning alternatives for philanthropists. A recognized authority in tax and non-profit law, Jim frequently speaks at conferences around the country and has published numerous articles. From 1987 to 1990, he served as a member of the Exempt Organization Advisory Group to the Commissioner of the IRS, and he served nearly 20 years as an adjunct professor of law in the graduate tax program at Emory University School of Law.
