Bryan Mcintyre

But as Mr. McIntyre progressed through law school and into practice, he saw that things were more nuanced than he had imagined. Many assistant prosecutors were constrained in their ability to make independent decisions, and those who spoke out against unconstitutional police practices faced potential retaliation. During his time in law school, Mr. McIntyre was given some sound counsel from a retired judge who emphasized the importance of the public defender's position. He understood the value of public defenders in guaranteeing impartial trials, protecting fundamental rights, and fighting the unfair distribution of power in the justice system. He spent two years after graduating from the University of Illinois College of Law in Urbana-Champaign working as a clinical program supervisor. Mr. McIntyre moved to Springfield in 2020 to work as an associate appellate defense on appeals throughout central Illinois. Despite the increased exposure to many types of courts that came with appellate work, he realized that there was little he could do to help his clients once verdicts and sentences had been given down. Recognizing his strengths as a litigator, he longed for a return to the courtroom. Mr. McIntyre came to have great admiration for the job of public defenders and sympathy for the difficulties they encountered as a result of circumstances beyond their control. But he felt that as a solo attorney, he could give his clients honest counsel and aggressive representation.
