John Frederick Hurlbut

A native of Aurora, Illinois, John Hurlbut received his law degree from Valparaiso University School of Law. He is in private practice in his own firm, Hurlbut & hurlbut, P.C., concentrating on civil litigation, particularly matters related to real estate, business disputes, and immigration law. Admitted to practice in Illinois and Indiana, he is a member of both the general and trial bars of the United States District of Illinois. He is also a member of the State Bar Association, the Kane County Bar Association and the American Immigration Lawyers Association. Outside of his law practice, Mr. Hurlbut is actively involve in his community. Currently the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce, he served on the City of Elgin Planning and Development Commission since 2000 and was its chairman from 2004 to 2009. A board member with the United Way of Elgin since 2006, Mr. Hurlbut served as Chair of the Board from May 2006 through December 2007. He is also a member of the Elgin Community College Foundation; he recently completed his term as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Before entering private practice in 1998, Hurlbut was a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Nothern District of Illinois, principally engaged in the defense of the civil actions filed against the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Hurlbut served as the Deputy District counsel for the INS offices in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin from 1989 to 1997. As the number two lawyer in the office, Hurlbut tried high profile immigration cases, advised law enforcement officers, and worked with the various U.S. Attorney's Offices within their jurisdiction, as well as the Office of Immigration Litigation within the Department of Justice, in a wide variety of civil and criminal cases. During the course of his career at the Department, Mr. Hurlbut successfully completed a number of intensive litigation training programs, including the National Institute for Trial Advocacy Skills Program and the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Advocacy Course at the Attorney General Advocacy Institute. Immediately following law school, Mr. Hurlbut was a law clerk for the Honorable Wesley W. Ratliff, Jr., of the Indiana Court of Appeals. John F. Hurlbut resides in the Elgin with his wife, Catherine, and their three children.
