About Alan M. Parra

Alan M. Parra is a founding partner of the Law Offices of Alan M. Parra, PLLC. Alan has practiced immigration law for more than 10 years. Prior to joining private practice, Alan worked as a Human Rights Officer at the UN High Commissioner where he was responsible for mandates established by the then UN Commission on Human Rights on Sudan, torture and independence of judges and lawyers. In this position he participated in dozens of fact-finding missions to all regions of the world to investigate gross violations of human rights. Among the missions he undertook were trips to Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Peru, Colombia, Pakistan, Turkey, Northern Ireland and Russia. Since leaving the United Nations, Alan has devoted himself to guiding his clients through the complex immigration process. Having witnessed first-hand the atrocities committed by governments around the world and a deep empathy for the suffering experienced by survivors of torture, he has a passion for seeking protection for his clients. He brings that same passion to helping families reunite, assisting them in bringing their relatives to the United States, or helping individuals navigate the complex immigration process to obtain Lawful Permanent Residency or U.S. citizenship. Alan focuses his practice on litigation before Immigration Courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals and U.S. Federal Courts, as well as before the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Consulates abroad. He has specific experience in appellate litigation, defense against removal, asylum and complex consular matters. Alan has taught as an Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University, Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, and at the University of Virginia, from which he obtained his Ph.D. in International Law. He was also the Albert Gallatin Fellow at the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva, Switzerland and recipient of a Ford Foundation Fellowship to attend the Hague Academy of International Law. He is a Board member of Advocates for Survivors of Torture and Trauma and a Board Member and Legal Adviser for the International Centre for Refugee and Displaced Ethiopians.
