About Paula J. Peters
Her expertise has been repeatedly recognized by her peers. She is a Fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, has an “AV” rating from Martindale Hubbell, is recognized as a “Super Lawyer” and was identified by What’s Up Annapolis magazine as a “Leading Lawyer.” She was elected by her peers four times for four-year terms to the Judicial Nominating Commission. She was selected by the Judges of the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County as a Master/Examiner to assist the court in hearing testimony to support divorce complaints. Paula said “I believe that as an attorney, not only do we vigorously represent our clients but also we have an obligation to look at the law as it exists and as it applies to people and to do what we can to make the law more equitable for everyone.” To “walk the walk”, Paula Peters has had a major role in revising family law since 1980. As an appointee of the Governor, on the Maryland Commission for Women and the Advisory Council on Child Support Enforcement, she worked with the legislature advancing the interests of families. As the chair of the family law section council of the Maryland State Bar Association and the Maryland Women’s Bar for many years she advanced the positions of those organizations on revisions to family law in Maryland. In addition to advocacy, she also has presents at continuing legal education programs for her peers. Paula is a graduate of the University of Maryland where she majored in government and politics. After a short stint as a graduate student at the University of Maryland, she decided to attend law school and graduated in 1979 from the University of Baltimore where she was a member of the Law Review. Her last day of classes in law school was not only a milestone for her education, it was also a milestone in her family life. She returned home from her last law school class only to be taken to the hospital later that night by her then husband where she delivered their daughter. Paula has a variety of interests outside the law which she is able to pursue. In addition to several serious hobbies, not the least of which is a passion for travel throughout the world, she is actively engaged in civic work and a number of charitable and philanthropic causes. She coupled charitable work with her passion for traveling which had an unexpected result. Paula met her husband in Kosova the year after the war when they both were volunteers for the United Methodist Committee on Relief. She has said repeatedly that when she volunteered, she never expected to be rewarded for doing charitable work by finding the best husband ever.
