Ronald Alden Witmer

Ronald A. Witmer concentrates his legal practice in the areas of divorce and other family law matters. He also serves as a trustee of various trusts established by and for clients and represents social service agencies and professionals in litigation matters. Following his admission to the Massachusetts bar in 1975, he represented individuals in matrimonial law cases and conducted other civil litigation for fifteen years at the Boston firm now known as Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP. As a senior partner in the Litigation Department, he served as chairperson of that firm's Domestic Relations Practice Group. In January 1991, he established the predecessor firm to Witmer, Karp, Warner & Ryan LLP. Born in Jackson, Michigan in 1941, Mr. Witmer earned a B.A. at Albion College, graduating in 1964. He also attended the Union Theological Seminary in New York City, earning an M.Div. degree in 1967. He received a J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law in 1975 and is admitted to practice in the state and federal courts of Massachusetts. He is a member of the Massachusetts, American and Boston Bar Associations. Listed in The Best Lawyers In America since 1989, Mr. Witmer has engaged in a wide range of legal and community activities during his thirty years of work as an attorney. He regularly teaches in the fields of matrimonial law and legal ethics for Massachusetts Continuing Legal Education, Inc. (MCLE), including a biannual course on legal ethics sponsored jointly by MCLE and the Board of Bar Overseers. As a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, he has held every office, including that of President, of the Massachusetts Chapter, and is a founding member of the Massachusetts Family and Probate American Inn of Court. He was named as one of the top one hundred Massachusetts Super Lawyers in the November 2005 issue of Boston Magazine. Mr. Witmer joins other lawyers in teaching trial and appellate advocacy skills to young attorneys. He regularly serves as a member of the faculty in seminars and workshops sponsored by Harvard Law School, Northeastern University School of Law, Suffolk Law School, MCLE and various bar associations. He also has served as a judge in the Ames Moot Court Competition at Harvard Law School and the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition. Mr. Witmer, who has five children of his own, believes that working with people who are involved in divorces, custody disputes and other family law matters offers attorneys a unique opportunity to help people address their personal and legal crises with dignity and assist them in remaining financially viable as they enter a new phase of life.
