A Pathway to Law and Advocacy for Working People “I can trace my interest in the legal field back to the fourth grade,” Tamara said when asked to reflect on the moments and milestones that led her to a career in workers’ compensation law. “During my childhood, there were times where I was in the foster care system. I remember attending hearings and listening to all these big people talk about me and make decisions about my life. I realized, one day, I wanted to be the one making the decisions, the one helping others have the final say in their future. I decided to become an attorney so I could help others who were put in difficult situations through no fault of their own.” Born in Maple Heights and raised by her grandparents, Tamara has lived and worked in northeast Ohio for most of her life. She worked multiple jobs starting at age 15, including at the Geauga Lake amusement park and McDonald’s. Sadly, her academic career at the University of Toledo was interrupted when her grandmother, who had been a mother to Tamara and her brother, passed away suddenly, and Tamara had to move back to her hometown to be the legal guardian of her younger brother. Determined, Tamara went back to college and graduated from the University of Akron and later the Akron School of Law. Since passing the bar, Tamara has worked as both a public defender and a county prosecutor, earning rare, highly valuable experience practicing law on both sides of the judicial aisle. She has gained experience from labor union and employee representation to defending tenants in eviction cases, representing police officers being denied workers’ comp claims, and prosecuting felony offenders, Tamara has excelled through it all. Helping the Underdog Obtain Justice “When I was a county prosecutor, my role was to obtain justice for victims and ensure the community was safe from violent offenders, I also had a duty to Defendants to get them the rehabilitation they needed so they would not reoffend,” Tamara said. “I see my role in civil law as a workers’ compensation attorney very similarly. My job is to keep families safe and secure by helping injured workers, often the breadwinners of families, in securing the compensation they need to get their lives back, to get their houses back in order, and put a spotlight on areas that employers can improve, so they are not continuously liable for injuries that occur on their watch.” To Tamara, representing plaintiffs in workers’ compensation cases is about helping them attain justice, but it’s also about holding employers accountable and bending the arc of employment practices towards policies that are safer and more equitable for all. “Every time I win a case against an employer and secure benefits for my client, I know I’m incentivizing employers to implement better safety measures so future workers don’t experience life-altering workplace injuries.” Work/Life Balance When she’s not working at the firm’s Cleveland office, Tamara spends time with her son, Parker. “He’s my little bestie,” Tamara says. Community Impact Tamara embodies the core tenets of NRS Injury Law during her free time. She is deeply involved in showing up for her community and giving back. Tamara is a member of Torchbearers Akron, where she takes an active role in improving the community via environmental volunteering campaigns. Tamara serves as First Vice President of the Akron Canton Barristers Association, where she works on civil rights and social action issues. She has also been a member of the Akron Urban League of Young Professionals since 2018. As she was earning her law degree, Tamara received an honors chord for providing over 500 hours of community service while in law school, a feat recognized by the Ohio State Supreme Court. In her free time, Tamara helps people who need legal help but who can’t afford it. She also volunteers to end food insecurity by working with People Feeding People to deliver 10,000 pounds of food monthly to communities across northeast Ohio. In the future, Tamara would like to take the lead on new community action campaigns. She seeks to implement an initiative she started during her time at the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office within the law firm, a NRS Injury Law Costume Drive and a safe “Trunk-or-Treat” event to help families from disadvantaged communities receive free Halloween costumes and access safe Trick-or-Treating opportunities.
