Family law was appealing to Margaret M. Daly because it allowed an opportunity to practice law not just behind a desk in an office but in court, interacting one-on-one with clients and other attorneys. Maintaining open and forthright lines of communication between an attorney and a client is a must, especially when handling issues that are easily clouded by emotion, according to Ms. Daly. "You have to be able to relate to your client enough that they feel they can be open with you," she said. "A lot of people are initially just looking for someone who will listen to their story. If you can listen, and listen well, you gain the client’s trust and set yourself up for a very successful relationship with them throughout their litigation."
