Burns is a former federal, state and municipal prosecutor, practicing criminal law since 1998. In addition to his practice with the Wetmore Law Firm, he also serves as a Municipal Judge for the City of Folly Beach. Throughout his career, and from all perspectives of the judicial system, he has earned an outstanding reputation with law enforcement, prosecution and the judiciary. There he handled all manner of misdemeanor crimes, Driving Under the Influence charges and traffic violations. He then served as an Assistant Solicitor for the Ninth Judicial Circuit in both Charleston and Berkeley Counties, acting as a managing litigation team leader and the chief drug prosecutor. Over a long tenure, he took the lead in countless felonies: Murder and other violent crime, Trafficking and other drug offenses, Burglary and other property crime and Felony Driving Under the Influence and other serious traffic charges. He then served as an Assistant United States Attorney in Charleston, South Carolina. Assigned to the Violent Crime section, he represented the United States in Drug Trafficking, Gang Intervention and Firearms investigations. He also served as the chief prosecutor for the Central Violations Bureau, where he handled all manner of misdemeanor violations of federal law. In 2023, he was appointed Municipal Judge for the City of Folly Beach. From the bench, he continues to serve the public, presiding over cases involving Driving Under the Influence and other alcohol offenses, drug offenses and other violations of state law and city code.Burns joined his wife, Spencer, at the Wetmore Law Firm. His practice focuses on seeking justice for those who have been injured by the actions of others or who have been victimized by crime. Being charged with a crime is often the darkest hour for you and your family. Burns is experienced and highly skilled at criminal and traffic defense, to include violent crime, drug offenses and Driving Under the Influence and other alcohol and traffic violations.
