Brad Hornsby

Brad Hornsby has practiced law for 40 years. He began his legal career in 1982 serving as Judicial Clerk for the Honorable Ben H. Cantrell of the Tennessee Court of Appeals. Brad focuses his practice on Divorce and Family Law, Criminal Defense, and various other litigation matters. He is the go-to authority in Murfreesboro on military divorce matters. He has tried literally thousands of family law and criminal defense cases in both state and federal courts including family law cases in the Circuit, Chancery, and Juvenile Courts in Tennessee. In 1983, he also began a military career in the United States Air Force, Judge Advocate General Corps. While serving as an Assistant Staff Judge Advocate at Brooks Air Force Base, TX, Brad advised the Air Force Drug Testing Laboratory and prosecuted military members in courts-martial proceedings. He later served as an Area Defense Counsel at Lackland Air Force Base, TX, the largest and busiest office in the Air Force. While there he represented hundreds of individuals in courts-martial proceedings as well as thousands of military members in Article 15 actions, discharge proceedings, and other adverse actions. In 1987, Brad entered the Air Force Reserves and returned to Murfreesboro and private practice. For the last 18 years of his reserve military service, he served as a Circuit Defense Counsel assigned to Travis Air Force Base, CA. While assigned there, Brad represented military members charged with virtually every offense under the Uniform Code of Military Justice at practically every base west of the Mississippi River. During these years he was also assigned many high-profile cases including successfully representing a Major General in a discharge action and first-degree murder clients. Upon his retirement as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2007, Brad was the most experienced and successful court-martial practitioner in the Air Force, teaching seminars and younger attorneys, and representing clients in fully litigated criminal trials. Brad returned to Murfreesboro, Tennessee in 1987 to begin private practice. Prior to joining Bennett | Michael | Hornsby, he was a partner at Bullock, Fly, and Hornsby and Evans for 35 years, focusing his practice on Divorce and Family Law, Criminal Defense, and various other litigation matters. He has tried literally thousands of cases in both state and federal courts including family law cases in the Circuit, Chancery, and Juvenile Courts in Tennessee. He has also represented criminal defendants before juries for charges from DUI to first degree murder, trying more trials to jury than any other private defense lawyer in this jurisdiction. Brad has also been actively involved in education law, successfully litigating several high-profile cases including a Title IX claim for inequality for women athletes in Rutherford County, admission of a blind student into the Rutherford County schools, and representing teachers falsely accused of improper acts. Brad is also the go-to authority for in Murfreesboro on military divorce matters. He is also a frequent speaker at legal seminars about the Former Spouses’ Protection Act, the Servicemembers’ Civil Relief Act, the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Tennessee Child Support, and various other legal topics. Brad holds a Bachelor of Science degree (cum laude) from Middle Tennessee State University and received his law degree from the University of Tennessee and is licensed to practice in all state and Federal Courts in Tennessee, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Services. Brad is a member of the Tennessee Bar Association and the Rutherford/Cannon County Bar Association and is vice chair of the Rutherford/Cannon County Bench and Bar Committee. He is married to Karen H. Hornsby, a retired staff attorney for the Tennessee Supreme Court. Brad and Karen have four adult children and five grandchildren.
