Matthew P. Smith

Matthew P. Smith is an associate in the firm's Product Liability & Mass Tort Litigation Practice Group. He concentrates his practice on complex products liability cases, primarily involving pharmaceutical products and medical devices. Products Liability Litigation. Matt has substantial experience in complex pharmaceutical actions in both state and federal courts, and has defended manufacturers in numerous cases involving over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs. Matt has been a member of the trial team for five pharmaceutical product liability jury trials in which plaintiffs demanded between $10 and $988 million, all of which resulted in defense judgments. Matt has substantial involvement with all aspects of product liability cases, including drafting and responding to discovery, authoring motions and oppositions to motions, taking and defending fact and expert witness depositions, authoring motions in limine and other pretrial documents, drafting trial examination outlines, and preparing witnesses for trial testimony. In General. Matt received a bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 2003. He received his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall) in 2006. He served as an extern for the Hon. Mary Jo Levinger, Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara. Matt is admitted to practice in California.
