Tahira Khan Merritt

The Law Office of Tahira Khan Merritt litigates cases of sexual abuse and sexual assault exclusively. For two decades, we have represented adult and child victims of sex crimes in civil cases against various corporations and institutions, including schools, colleges and universities, both public and private, religious organizations, such as the Catholic Church, the Baptist Church, the Greek Orthodox Church, the Episcopal Church, and the Presbyterian Church among others. We have also represented victims of rape in youth sports organizations, youth camps, daycares, and the like. Ms. Merritt graduated from The University of Texas at Austin, cum laude and Baylor Law School in Waco. She was admitted to the State Bar of Texas in 1989. Prior to opening her own practice in Dallas in 1996, she was an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Texas, focusing on tort litigation. Since then Tahira has been representing victims of sexual assault and sexual abuse. To this end she has also served as a Special Prosecutor for Eastland County in a high profile pedophile priest case she had previously litigated civilly. To achieve additional closure for her clients beyond civil remedies, she has contributed toward the incarceration of five pedophiles. Ms. Merritt’s exceptional concern for compromised children has led her into an ancillary area of law: establishing Guardianships for children with learning differences in the Probate Courts. Her interest in their welfare is intense and personal, both as an attorney and as a parent. She has given freely of her professional time and experience on a pro-bono basis particularly in the area of clergy sexual abuse of children. Ms. Merritt has taken keen interest in the epidemic of Campus rapes of students, both female and male. She represents victims burdened with the daunting prospect of petitioning for justice before a University disciplinary panel and the University attorneys. Unrepresented, the outcomes for victims have sometimes been less than successful. Ms. Merritt has recently presented for the National Crime Victims Bar Association on Civil Justice for Victims of Crime in Texas. She is a member in good standing of several professional associations, namely: American Association for Justice, Asian American Bar Association, Texas Women Lawyers Association, Texas Trial Lawyers Association, Dallas Women Lawyers Association and Dallas Trial Lawyers Association.
