About Susanne Gustin

Susanne graduated magna cum laude from the University of Utah in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Middle East Studies and a minor in Hebrew. She was admitted to the Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi honor societies. She attended the University of Utah law school, graduating in 1991. Since being admitted to practice, Susanne has been a criminal defense trial lawyer. She started her career at the public defender’s office where she handled drug cases as a member of the “drug team” and major felonies, including child sex crimes, murder, rape, gang and burglary cases. In private practice since 1998, Susanne Gustin has continued to represent clients in child sex cases in juvenile and adult courts (aggravated sexual abuse of a child, sodomy on a child, rape of a child, solicitation of a minor over the internet, child pornography and other child sex offenses). She also continues to represent clients in domestic violence, drug, lewdness and retail theft cases. Gustin is a member of the Utah Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys and its former president in 2002. She is also active in the David K. Watkiss--Sutherland II Inns of Court and served as president in 2012. She is currently a Utah State Bar Commissioner. She has the highest AV-Rating from Martindale-Hubbel and is a member of the “Top 100 Trial Lawyers” Association. She is also listed in Utah Business Magazine as one of the best criminal defense attorneys in Utah. Susanne Gustin has handled several high-profile criminal cases: the nationally televised case of State v. Martin MacNeill. MacNeill was was convicted of killing his wife after allegedly forcing her to take pain medication after a facelift operation. Michele MacNeill was found dead in the bathtub of the couple’s home; State v.David James Bell. Bell was acquitted of kidnapping when the neighbor’s children wandered over to his house after a July 4th all-night drinking party. Bell, who is gay, and his partner, were nearly beaten to death; State v. Eric Charlton. Charlton was a former Marine charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of his brother at Yuba Lake; and State v. David O. Kingston, polygamist charged with sexual assault after “marrying” his fourteen year old niece. Susanne is a Utah girl from Salt Lake City. She enjoys spending her spare time with family and friends. She grew up skiing, swimming and playing soccer on the first girl’s soccer team in Utah.
