Matthew Burns

Matthew Burns is an associate at Schad, Diamond & Shedden, P.C. He received his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2006, and his A.B. from the University of Michigan in 2003 where he majored in economics and history. Mr. Burns practices in the areas of class actions, commercial litigation, and qui tam litigation. Mr. Burns recently litigated two class actions resulting in significant recoveries for plaintiff classes. In one of the actions, Schad, Diamond & Shedden recovered $127.6 million for the plaintiff class against an insurance company. In the other action Schad, Diamond & Shedden recovered $8.8 million for the plaintiff class against a consumer energy provider. In addition to his class action work, Mr. Burns is currently litigating over twenty qui tam actions brought under the Illinois False Claims Act against Internet retailers that failed to collect and remit use tax to the State of Illinois. Prior to his employment at the firm, Mr. Burns was a judicial extern to the Honorable Rebecca Pallmeyer in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Mr. Burns is a member of the Chicago, Illinois State and American Bar Associations. He is admitted to the State Bar of Illinois, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
